The incident reportedly occurred late Friday night after Nayeem landed at Chattogram airport and was travelling home by CNG auto-rickshaw.
According to the 26-year-old spinner, his vehicle was stopped near Lalkhan Bazar around 11:25 pm by men claiming to be police officers.
Nayeem said he offered to have his bags checked but was instead accused of being a suspect and forcibly taken into custody.
“They grabbed me by the throat and forced me into a vehicle. When I tried to get out, two people restrained me while another beat me with a pipe,” Nayeem told local media.
The spinner claimed that despite identifying himself as a national cricketer, the alleged assault continued in front of a crowd that had gathered at the scene.
He further alleged that he was subjected to intimidation after being taken to a police station, where he was instructed to keep his eyes down while speaking to officers.
Nayeem later contacted Bangladesh Cricket Board president Tamim Iqbal and BCB director Israfil Khosru after regaining access to his phone. He said board officials assured him that the matter would be investigated and justice pursued.
In an official statement on Saturday, the Bangladesh Cricket Board expressed “deep concern” over reports that the national cricketer had been mistreated by members of a law-enforcement agency.
The board strongly condemned what it described as “unacceptable and inappropriate behaviour” towards a national athlete and called for a fair and impartial investigation into the incident.
The BCB also said it had been in constant contact with Nayeem and his family since learning of the matter and pledged to provide all necessary support while working closely with local authorities.
The board reiterated its commitment to protecting the welfare, dignity and rights of all its players and said it would continue to closely monitor developments surrounding the case.
