Around 20–30 individuals gathered outside the ACC office, chanting slogans in Shakib’s name before entering the premises and demanding that a written complaint accusing Asif of corruption be accepted. To avoid unrest, officials received the complaint, which is currently under review.
However, Shakib has denied any involvement in the incident.
Speaking to Cricfrenzy, the former Bangladesh captain said, “I just woke up for Sehri. I noticed the incident. But I don’t know who is doing these things. I have no involvement in this in any way. People are using my name however they can (laughs).”
Although Shakib had earlier announced his retirement in Chennai, he had hoped to bid farewell on home soil during the South Africa series.
He traveled from the United States to Dubai in anticipation of joining the national team but was reportedly not given clearance by the government to return to Bangladesh.
At the time, around a hundred protesters under the banner of “students and citizens” demonstrated outside Mirpur Stadium, effectively blocking his return.
Speculation has persisted that the then youth and sports adviser played a significant role in preventing Shakib’s comeback.
Following a change in government, Asif is no longer serving as adviser. With growing hopes of Shakib’s return, sections of his fan base have intensified their criticism of the former official.
