Nahida Akter has been appointed Bangladesh women’s T20I captain, replacing Nigar Sultana Joty, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) confirmed on Sunday. Sobhana Mostary has been named vice-captain.

Joty decided to step down from the T20I captaincy after the Asian Games, opting to focus more on her individual performance. Nahida had been among the leading candidates to take over, and the BCB has now handed her the responsibility.

BCB women’s wing chairman Rafiqul Islam Babu confirmed the appointments to Cricbuzz.

“We sat down with members of the selection panel and others before deciding to appoint Nahida as the T20I captain. Sobhana Mostary will be her deputy,” Babu said.

He added that Nahida’s long experience as vice-captain played a key role in the decision.

“Nahida has been serving as vice-captain for quite a long time. We now feel this is the right time to hand her the responsibility of leading the T20I side,” he said.

Nahida has served as Bangladesh’s T20I vice-captain since 2022, when Joty took over the leadership. Although Joty has stepped down from the T20I captaincy, she will continue to lead the side in ODIs. She recently captained Bangladesh during their three-match ODI series in Australia.

Joty’s decision to relinquish the T20I captaincy reportedly came as a surprise to the BCB.

There have also been suggestions that the wicketkeeper-batter was frustrated by what she felt was a lack of proper recognition from the board in recent times, although the BCB has not officially provided further details.

Nahida now faces the challenge of leading Bangladesh’s T20I side while helping the team move forward.

Her first major assignment will be the ICC Women’s Emerging Nations Trophy in Thailand, where Bangladesh will begin their campaign against Pakistan on November 12.
