Mumbai Indians and head coach Mahela Jayawardene have parted ways ahead of the IPL 2027 auction, ending his second stint with the franchise.

Jayawardene took charge before the 2025 season, having previously coached MI from 2017 to 2022. During his first stint, he guided the franchise to three IPL titles, including their most recent triumph in 2020. MI finished fourth in 2025 before placing ninth in 2026.

According to ESPNcricinfo, a possible coaching change was discussed during the franchise’s season review in August, with both the player leadership group and management agreeing to seek fresh perspectives. Jayawardene was also understood to be supportive of bringing in younger coaches.

“Mumbai Indians has been a very special part of my journey for over a decade now,” Jayawardene said, thanking the Ambani family, players, staff and fans for their support.

MI owner Nita Ambani also thanked Jayawardene for his contribution, describing his leadership and commitment as significant to the franchise.

His departure leaves MI searching for a new head coach ahead of the November 15 retention deadline. The franchise’s management will also face questions over captain Hardik Pandya after MI finished ninth in IPL 2026 with just four wins from 14 matches.

The franchise is expected to appoint a new coach before the auction, reportedly scheduled for Goa around a month after the retention deadline.
