The Tigers’ remarkable victory has drawn widespread praise from several cricketing greats.
Speaking during a live discussion, de Villiers admitted he never expected Bangladesh to win a Test in Australia.
“Bangladesh have beaten Australia. I don't think any of us ever expected to say something like this, especially with the game being in Australia.”
He added that winning a Test in Australia is an enormous challenge, making Bangladesh’s achievement even more impressive.
“It is not an easy task to go to Australia and win a Test match. But Bangladesh have achieved that unbelievable success, even after Australia won the toss. Bangladesh lost the toss and won the match, that is truly remarkable.”
De Villiers was also surprised to see Bangladesh sitting fourth in the World Test Championship standings, above established sides such as India, Sri Lanka and England.
The former South Africa captain said the result was excellent news for Test cricket and admitted he was struggling to find the words to describe Bangladesh’s rise.
“This is great news for Test cricket. As I was saying, Bangladesh winning a Test in Australia, I never thought I would have to say something like this, especially live. Honestly, I am lost for words.”
De Villiers also wondered whether Bangladesh could develop into a major force in the World Test Championship.
“It is wonderful to see where Bangladesh have reached today. Can they become a dangerous force in the World Test Championship and find a way to keep winning? You never know. Time will tell.”
