Australia bowled only 86 overs on the third day, four short of the required 90. Under ICC rules, teams can be fined and lose WTC points for every over they fail to complete.
Australia could therefore face a four-point deduction, while each player could be fined five per cent of their match fee for every over short.
The deduction would reduce Australia from 84 to 80 WTC points, although their 77.78% points percentage would remain unchanged.
Bangladesh, meanwhile, have climbed to fourth in the WTC standings with 40 points and a 66.67% points percentage.
The match referee will consider factors including Darwin’s hot conditions and the fall of wickets before deciding whether Australia will be sanctioned.
Bangladesh also fell short of the required over-rate in the first innings, but escaped punishment after bowling Australia out in just 53 overs.
