India sealed their place in the semi-finals of the ICC Men's T20 World Cup with a five-wicket win over West Indies in the Super Eights clash at Eden Gardens on Sunday, setting up a last-four showdown with England.

Chasing 196, India rode on a magnificent unbeaten 97 from 50 balls by Sanju Samson to reach 199/5 in 19.2 overs, completing the job with four balls to spare.

Earlier, West Indies posted a competitive 195/4 after being asked to bat. Skipper Shai Hope made 32 off 33, while Roston Chase (40 off 25) and Shimron Hetmyer (27 off 12) provided impetus through the middle overs.

Rovman Powell (34* off 19) and Jason Holder (37* off 22) finished strongly, adding late momentum to push the total close to 200.

Jasprit Bumrah was India’s standout bowler with 2 for 36, removing both Chase and Hetmyer at crucial junctures, while Hardik Pandya and Varun Chakravarthy chipped in with a wicket each.

India’s chase began shakily as Abhishek Sharma and Ishan Kishan fell inside five overs, and captain Suryakumar Yadav departed for 18, leaving the side at 99/3 midway through the innings.

However, Samson anchored the innings with authority, striking 12 fours and four sixes at a strike rate of 194.

Tilak Varma (27 off 15) and Hardik Pandya (17 off 14) kept India on course before falling late, but Samson held firm. Shivam Dube’s brisk unbeaten 8 off 4 ensured there were no late hiccups.

For West Indies, Jason Holder and Shamar Joseph claimed two wickets apiece, but the total proved just short on a good batting surface.

With the victory, India advance to the semi-finals, where they will face England in a high-stakes clash.
