Bangladesh’s ODI Captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz believes Shakib’s return would significantly ease a captain’s responsibilities.
Shakib, who served as an MP under the former Awami League government while still playing, faces multiple cases and arrest warrants following the government’s fall.
Many in the cricket community argue the charges are baseless, noting he was playing league cricket abroad at the time. Though the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) had earlier distanced itself from the issue, it recently submitted case documents to the ministry as part of efforts to facilitate his return. The matter now awaits government approval.
“We all know the full situation regarding Shakib bhai. If he is in the team, it becomes easier for a captain, especially in terms of team combination. Since discussions are ongoing with the cricket board, it is ultimately the board’s decision. You have heard before that everyone is positive about Shakib bhai. I believe if the processes involved are handled properly, then things will become easier,” said Miraz.
“The decision about Shakib’s return rests entirely with the cricket board. I think if the issue is resolved, it will make it easier for him to play. As a captain, having a player like him in the team would make things much easier for us.”
The BCB had planned to recall him for the upcoming Pakistan ODI series starting March 11 in Mirpur, but without government clearance, his participation now appears unlikely. Even if cleared of the murder case, Shakib must still address other charges, including one related to alleged stock market manipulation.
