Hobart Hurricanes booked their place in the next stage of the Big Bash League with a tense three-run victory over Melbourne Stars in a rain-affected Knockout match in Hobart, decided by the DLS method.

Batting first in a reduced 10-over contest, Hobart posted a competitive 114 for 5, powered by a superb innings from Beau Webster.

The all-rounder smashed 47 off just 26 balls, striking three fours and three sixes to anchor the Hurricanes’ innings. Nikhil Chaudhary provided late impetus with a rapid 24 off 11 balls, while Mitchell Owen and Ben McDermott chipped in with brisk cameos.

For the Stars, Haris Rauf claimed two wickets, though the bowlers struggled to contain the scoring in the latter overs.

Chasing a revised target of 85 from seven overs, Melbourne Stars got close but fell just short at 81 for 4. Joe Clarke led the fightback with an aggressive 31 off 17 balls, while Glenn Maxwell and Hilton Cartwright finished unbeaten.

However, crucial breakthroughs from Riley Meredith, who picked up two wickets, and disciplined bowling in the closing overs tilted the contest Hobart’s way.

Bangladesh leg-spinner Rishad Hossain has conceded 24 runs from his two overs without taking a wicket.

With the narrow win, Hobart Hurricanes remain alive in the BBL title race, while Melbourne Stars bow out after a spirited but ultimately unsuccessful chase.
