Shakib has not returned to Bangladesh since the fall of the Awami League government in August 2024.
He has also been absent from the national team since October that year. The star all-rounder, who served as a Member of Parliament under the previous government, faces multiple legal cases, including being named in a murder case filed at Adabor Police Station and allegations of financial irregularities linked to the stock market.
Mashrafe, although believed to be in the country, has also stayed away from public appearances due to legal complications.
Cases have been filed against him in Narail over allegations related to violence and unrest during political protests. Both former captains are widely regarded as key figures of Bangladesh cricket’s golden era, and fans have expressed their desire to see them back on the field.
Youth and Sports State Minister Aminul Haque has advised both players to address the legal matters through proper channels.
“Shakib and Mashrafe are legendary cricketers of Bangladesh. I have seen the love people of Bangladesh have for them and their passion for the game. As a sportsman, I believe since there are case-related matters, this is a state decision,” he said.
“According to the state decision, if through their personal lawyers they face the legal issues and prove themselves innocent, and then come back to play on the country’s field, as a sportsman I will definitely welcome them. You come, face the cases you have, and if you are proven innocent, return to the field, we will welcome you. In this matter, we will be 100 percent flexible, In Sha Allah.”
While no formal steps have yet been reported regarding Mashrafe’s return, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has begun efforts to bring Shakib back to the national side.
The board hopes to include him in the upcoming Pakistan series and has written to the Ministry of Youth and Sports seeking assistance in resolving his legal cases.
