There were even indications earlier that he might be reinstated in the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) central contract list.
However, the board recently announced the contracts without including Shakib, leaving uncertainty over his immediate comeback.
Despite that, the BCB has already begun efforts to facilitate his return. BCB vice-president Faruque Ahmed confirmed that developments could be known soon, stating that assessing Shakib’s fitness is the board’s responsibility, while matters related to security and other legal issues fall under the government’s jurisdiction.
Speaking to the media, Faruque said, “Two months after I became president, when we were playing a home series against South Africa, I started trying to bring him back. For various reasons, it did not happen. But just because it did not happen then does not mean it will not happen in the future.”
He reiterated that the BCB has always wanted Shakib to represent Bangladesh. “The cricket board always wants Shakib to play for Bangladesh if he is fit and earns his place in the team. I believe the process is ongoing and has progressed a long way. You may receive some news about this very soon,” he added.
Faruque described Shakib as a valuable asset for Bangladesh cricket. Following the July political unrest, several cases were filed against the star all-rounder, and an arrest warrant was reportedly issued in his name. In this context, the BCB official acknowledged that the board alone cannot resolve those matters.
“Selecting Shakib based on fitness is the cricket board’s job. But the other issues are not in the hands of the board, those require government efforts,” Faruque explained.
“The cricket board certainly wants him back. I have wanted this for a year. If he returns, he is an asset for us, he is a brand, and I believe he still can deliver.”
With the Pakistan series approaching, the possibility of Shakib’s return remains a key talking point in Bangladesh cricket.
