Persistent rain forced the opening Super Eights match of the T20 World Cup between New Zealand and Pakistan at the R. Premadasa Stadium to be abandoned without a ball being bowled on Saturday.

Although the toss was conducted on time, with Pakistan winning and electing to bat, heavy showers soon followed, preventing any play. The pitch and outfield remained under covers as umpires monitored conditions, but continuous rain meant the cut-off time for a five-over match was missed.

As no play was possible by the 10:16 pm (1646 GMT) deadline, the match was officially declared a no result. Both teams were awarded one point each.

Pakistan, New Zealand, England and co-hosts Sri Lanka are placed in Group 2 of the Super Eights stage, while defending champions India, South Africa, Zimbabwe and the West Indies compete in Group 1.

The top two teams from each group will advance to the semi-finals.
