The leadership change comes after Afghanistan’s disappointing campaign in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup and follows recent restructuring in the team management, including the appointment of new head coach Richard Pybus.
ACB chief selector Ahmad Shah Sulimankhil said the decision was taken as part of the board’s long-term strategy and leadership transition in the T20I format.
The selectors have also made several changes to the squad for the Sri Lanka series. Fazalhaq Farooqi, Gulbadin Naib and Mohammad Ishaq have been left out of the T20I team, while Noor Rahman, Sharafuddin Ashraf and Fareed Ahmad Malik have been included.
Fast bowler Zia Ur Rahman Sharifi has received his maiden ODI call-up, while Fareed Ahmad Malik returns to the ODI squad. Bilal Sami has retained his place in the ODI team after his five-wicket haul against Bangladesh national cricket team.
With a new captain and coach in place, Afghanistan will look to begin a fresh phase when they face Sri Lanka in the upcoming white-ball series.
