Sobhana Mostary’s potential has been discussed in Bangladesh women’s cricket for years. On Sunday, the batter finally delivered on that promise, scoring her maiden international century in her 107th match to achieve a historic milestone against Australia.

Mostary’s 118 was the first century by a Bangladesh woman against Australia. It was also only the fourth ODI hundred by an Asian batter on Australian soil.

Although Bangladesh suffered a heavy nine-wicket defeat in Brisbane, her innings emerged as one of the biggest positives from the tour.

“I am so happy about my century,” Mostary said. “I batted against a world champion team. It is the first time one of us scored a hundred in Australia. I thought about my batting style after the way I got out in the first ODI. I just realised how I can bat deep. I thought about my process. I went out there and played to my strength.”

Mostary walked to the crease in a difficult situation, with Bangladesh reduced to eight for three inside the eighth over. She responded with an assured display, initially finding the gaps through the covers before attacking legspinner Georgia Wareham with three beautifully placed boundaries through point in her first over.

She later struck Alana King for two fours on the off side, including an elegant cover drive that brought up her half-century from 66 deliveries.

Her steady scoring also allowed captain Nigar Sultana Joty to settle at the other end. The pair put together a remarkable 195-run partnership for the fourth wicket, Bangladesh’s highest stand for any wicket in women’s ODIs.

Mostary reached her century in the 45th over, celebrating the achievement with her captain at the crease. Joty remained unbeaten on 74, providing valuable support throughout the partnership.

Mostary credited Joty for helping her maintain her composure and encouraging her to believe in her ability to reach the milestone.

“Captain Joty told me to just stay out there, at least till the 40th over. Afterwards, we can maybe play our shots. We looked out for the bad ball, which we punished. We had to respect the good ball. Joty kept telling me that I am capable of scoring a century. Joty also played really well. She provided me with the support,” Mostary said.
