Asked whether the opening Test would last three or five days, Cummins gave a brief response: “Who knows!”
The two teams will meet in Test cricket for the first time in nearly seven years when the series opener begins in Darwin on Thursday at 6:30am Bangladesh time.
Their last Test series was played in Bangladesh in 2017, although they have faced each other regularly in ICC tournaments.
Drawing from those encounters, Cummins said Bangladesh are a team Australia never takes lightly in major events.
“I can’t say for sure right now. Maybe ask me in a week or two and I’ll have a better idea. But they’re a team we get nervous about when we play them in an ICC trophy because they have some really big players in their team.”
Despite growing talk in the Australian media about a possible three-day finish, Cummins expects a competitive contest.
“I don’t think I’ve ever played an easy Test match. So I’m sure they’ll be a pretty tough contest. They have some players we haven’t really seen before, so there are always some unknowns going into a Test.”
He also highlighted Bangladesh’s recent success and talent.
“They’ve had some big wins over the last few years and there’s some great talent in their team, so we’ll have to be fully prepared.”
Bangladesh are returning to Australia for Test cricket after almost 23 years, having last played there in 2003. Cummins believes such tours are valuable for Test cricket and would welcome more regular contests against Bangladesh.
“I think coming to Australia at this time of year and having the opportunity to play is really fantastic.”
“I’d like to go through this experience more and more. That’s one of the beauties of Test cricket, you get to play against different countries, every challenge is different and every team plays in a different style. So yes, I’d certainly be keen.”
