Bangladesh vice-captain Najmul Hossain Shanto has hailed his team’s “courage” and consistency after they sealed a historic first-ever ODI series win against Australia in Dhaka on Thursday.

Bangladesh defeated the reigning world champions by five wickets in a rain-affected second ODI to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, marking one of their biggest achievements in 50-over cricket.

Reflecting on the performance, Shanto said the team’s hard work in recent months had paid off in the series.

“It’s an amazing feeling, and the way we played this series, we showed a lot of courage,” Shanto said.

“We have been working really hard over the last few months and the way we played the last two matches, it’s outstanding. I’m really proud to be a part of this team.”

Shanto played a key role in the chase in the second ODI, scoring a steady 42 as Bangladesh recovered from an early wicket to build a crucial 86-run partnership with Soumya Sarkar.

His contributions, alongside strong performances from Towhid Hridoy and Mehidy Hasan Miraz, helped Bangladesh overhaul a revised target of 192 under the DLS method with 36 balls remaining.

The victory extends Bangladesh’s impressive home dominance, continuing a run of consecutive ODI series wins on home soil and underlining their growing consistency in the format.
