With Marsh sidelined, wicketkeeper-batter Josh Inglis has been handed captaincy duties for Pakistan tour. Regular captain Pat Cummins and vice-captain Travis Head are unavailable for the Pakistan series because of IPL commitments.
Marsh, who was representing Lucknow Super Giants in the IPL, returned home after his side’s match against Rajasthan Royals on May 19.
He had been expected to lead Australia in the ODI series against Pakistan beginning on May 30, but injury forced him out before the squad’s departure.
His absence comes as a major setback for Australia, particularly considering his impressive form in the IPL.
Marsh scored 111, 10, 90 and 96 in his last four innings and is viewed as one of Australia’s preferred opening options, alongside Head, for next year’s ODI World Cup plans.
Australia are yet to announce a replacement for Marsh, although young all-rounder Cooper Connolly is among the possible candidates after returning from the IPL.
For the Bangladesh series, Australia have already included Connolly, Xavier Bartlett, Ben Dwarshuis and Head in the squad.
