On the eve of the third ODI against New Zealand in Chattogram, Mushtaq spent an extended one-on-one net session with the young leg-spinner, fine-tuning key aspects such as his run-up, release point, and body alignment.
Mushtaq, renowned for his own deceptive googly during his playing days, said the focus is now on improving Rishad’s variations and control.
“He needs to develop his googly further, its angle, usage against right-handers, and consistency. A strong, repeatable action and better use of the crease are crucial for any leg-spinner,” he explained.
While Rishad has already shown promise with the delivery, Mushtaq believes it has not yet reached its full potential. The coaching staff are also working on making him more economical, ensuring he delivers impactful overs rather than just occasional good balls.
Despite the intensive preparation, Rishad was left out of the playing XI for the series-deciding ODI. However, Mushtaq dismissed suggestions of a setback, calling it a strategic move to build squad depth and strengthen the player’s mindset.
“Sometimes sitting out helps build mental strength. International cricket is as much about temperament as skill. Our responsibility is to ensure he stays mentally strong and ready,” he said, adding that rotation among spinners is part of a broader plan.
