Whether those hopes turn into reality, however, will soon be revealed as the Tigers begin their Asia Cup campaign tomorrow.
Placed in Group A of the eight-nation tournament, Bangladesh will face Hong Kong in their opening match. Ahead of the contest, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Aminul Islam Bulbul shared his advice and optimism for the team while attending a BCB run-scoring workshop on Wednesday.
Responding to journalists on what Bangladesh need to succeed in the Asia Cup, Bulbul emphasized:
“Running between the wickets and fielding will make the real difference. In this format, batting and bowling are often at par across teams. But if we can add 15 extra runs through running and save 10 runs in the field, those 25 runs could decide the outcome of a match.”
Afghanistan have already made a strong statement in their opening game, thrashing Hong Kong by scoring 188 before bowling them out for under 100. Bangladesh’s third group match will be against the Afghans. On that clash, Bulbul remarked:
“Their venue is the UAE, recently Abu Dhabi, now Sharjah. So they might enjoy home advantage. Still, given the skill set of our players, I am confident that if they give their all, they can do well, In Sha Allah.”
“I believe we have the potential to go far. This is such a format where making predictions is difficult, but I am very confident about this team.” He added.
