Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman Arun Singh Dhumal has declined to directly address claims that the BCCI pressured Kolkata Knight Riders into parting ways with Mustafizur Rahman, describing the episode only as “unfortunate.”

Questions over Mustafizur’s participation in the IPL had reportedly been raised by sections of Indian political groups, religious organisations and some religious figures.

The controversy followed the killing of garment worker in Mymensingh’s Bhaluka last December, an incident that triggered protests in parts of India, particularly in Kolkata. Several groups in India also accused Bangladesh of targeting religious minorities.

Amid the fallout, it was reported that the BCCI advised KKR to release the Bangladesh pacer, with the franchise eventually doing so.

The move sparked criticism in Bangladesh, where it was seen as another example of politics influencing cricket in the subcontinent.

Speaking to The Financial Express, Dhumal insisted the Indian government does not interfere in the day-to-day running of cricket, although he acknowledged that such incidents are unfortunate.

“I would say sometimes such incidents happen and they are very unfortunate. I do not think the government has any interest or role in the day-to-day functioning of cricket. From an overall cricketing perspective, the government is very supportive,” Dhumal said.

However, when asked specifically whether the BCCI had pressured Kolkata into dropping Mustafizur, Dhumal stopped short of offering a clear explanation.

“I would only say that it was unfortunate. Beyond that, I do not know much,” he said.
