The 31-year-old acknowledged the difficulty of the decision, which could result in a ban from the IPL until 2029 and a financial setback, with his deal reportedly worth around £200,000 per season.
However, Duckett said he remains confident it is the right call for his career.
“It was a very difficult decision, and I want to apologise to everyone at Delhi that I won’t be coming,” he told Telegraph Sport.
“I felt it was going to be a great opportunity when I put myself in the auction, and for a franchise like Delhi to pick me up was amazing. I was buzzing. It’s the best competition in the world with the best players, and would have been an amazing experience.
“I don’t know if I’m potentially saying goodbye to the IPL, having never played in it. With the age I am now [31], it might be tough for me, but I hope one day I’m able to represent Delhi. But I’ve thought a lot about this, and know it’s the right decision for my career.”
Duckett revealed that a demanding international schedule influenced his decision.
After a challenging winter that included a modest return in the The Ashes and limited opportunities in the T20 World Cup, he prioritised maintaining his place in England’s setup over franchise commitments.
Having spent months on tour, including a stint in India and New Zealand, Duckett opted to step back from the IPL in order to focus on red-ball cricket and his long-term international prospects.
