The reigning Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) champions Rajshahi Warriors have expressed their desire to represent Bangladesh in the upcoming edition of the Global Super League (GSL) T20.

So far, Rangpur Riders have represented Bangladesh in the first two editions of the GSL. However, as the current BPL champions, Rajshahi Warriors are now aiming to take that spot.

The franchise’s head coach Hannan Sarkar confirmed the development to Cricfrenzy, stating that the owners are also eager to see the team compete on the global stage.

“We want to play in a tournament like the Global Super League. Our owners also want Rajshahi Warriors to represent the team on the global stage. We have started discussions and will contact those involved with the tournament to understand the participation process in detail. If the opportunity arises, you will definitely see Rajshahi in a tournament like the GSL.” head coach Hannan said.

In the tournament’s inaugural edition in 2024, BPL champions Fortune Barishal were initially offered the chance to participate, but due to various reasons they declined, paving the way for Rangpur Riders.

Rangpur made an immediate impact by winning the title in their very first appearance, defeating Australia’s Victoria in the final. As champions, they earned automatic qualification for the second season as well. Although Rangpur reached the final again last season, they finished runners-up after losing to Guyana Amazon Warriors.

Rajshahi, on the other hand, enjoyed a dream debut season in the BPL. Owned by the Nabil Group, the franchise clinched the title by defeating Chattogram Royals in the final. Under the leadership of Najmul Hossain Shanto, the team featured star players such as Mushfiqur Rahim, Jimmy Neesham, Kane Williamson and Tanzid Hasan Tamim.

After lifting the BPL trophy, Rajshahi now want to carry Bangladesh’s flag onto the world stage.
