In a rare but increasingly common T20 tactic, MI Emirates opted to ‘tactically retire’ Shakib Al Hasan during their ILT20 match against Sharjah Warriors on Sunday, despite the all-rounder being unbeaten at the crease.

Shakib hit his first boundary off the third ball he faced after coming in to bat in the 12th over.

In the 16th over of the innings, despite not being dismissed, Bangladesh’s greatest cricketer walked off the field and returned to the dressing room.

At that stage, Shakib had scored 16 runs off 12 balls with two boundaries, and MI Emirates were 129 for 4. After his departure, captain Kieron Pollard came out to bat wearing the gold cap.

MI had opted to bat first after losing the toss. Mohammad Wasim, who made 39 off 29 balls, was the third batter to be dismissed, falling off the last delivery of the 11th over. Earlier, Jonny Bairstow (37 off 24) and Nicholas Pooran (5 off 12) had already departed.

Following the third wicket, Shakib came in to bat. After defending the first two deliveries from Sikandar Raza, he cut the third ball for a boundary. Later, he lofted Rashid Khan over cover for his second four.

He then faced six more balls and added seven runs but did not find another boundary. At the end of the 16th over, he was seen walking off. From the commentary box, Mike Haysman confirmed that MI had tactically retired him out.

Pollard, who replaced Shakib, did not last long either. Although he struck a boundary off his first delivery, he was caught out on the very next ball.

Tactical retirements have become increasingly common in T20 cricket. In the 2022 IPL, Ravichandran Ashwin’s tactical retirement created huge buzz when Rajasthan Royals made the move. Since then, the tactic has gradually become normalized.

MI Emirates posted 185-8 in the end.
