This decision follows his withdrawal from the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s (BCB) central contract for the period of January 1 to December 31, 2025, which he opted out of earlier this week.

Having amassed 11,047 runs in international cricket, Mahmudullah had already stepped away from Test cricket in 2021 and T20Is in October 2023, following Bangladesh’s tour of India.

In his farewell message, he thanked his supporters and those who played significant roles in his career:
"I would like to thank all of my teammates, coaches & especially my fans who have always supported me. A big thank you to my parents, my in-laws, especially my father-in-law & most importantly my brother Emdad Ullah, who has been there for me constantly since my childhood as my coach & mentor."

He also shared his appreciation for his family’s unwavering support:
"And finally thanks to my wife & kids who have been my support system through thick & thin. I know Raeid will miss me in red & green jersey. Not everything comes to an end in a perfect way but you say yes & move forward. PEACE........... Alhamdulillah. Best wishes to my team & Bangladesh cricket."

Mahmudullah’s retirement comes just a week after Mushfiqur Rahim bid farewell to ODI cricket. Both senior players were under scrutiny following Bangladesh’s disappointing Champions Trophy 2025 campaign, where the team failed to win a single match, and neither Mahmudullah nor Mushfiqur managed to make a significant impact.
