Bangladesh won gold when cricket made its Asian Games debut in 2010, although India and Pakistan did not send their strongest teams at the time.
The landscape is different this year, with the major Asian cricketing nations expected to field strong squads.
Litton said Bangladesh’s immediate target is to reach the final.
“Our main goal is to play well in this tournament and reach the final. If we can make the final, we will have a chance to win gold. But first, we have to get there,” Litton said. “As we always say in cricket, we will take it match by match. That is our main focus.”
Bangladesh have been preparing at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, with Litton saying he is satisfied with the team’s preparations.
The women’s Asian Games campaign ended with a fourth-place finish after a 31-run defeat to Pakistan in the bronze-medal playoff. Litton said the men’s team are eager to make the most of the opportunity.
“Our players have been eagerly waiting to play in this competition. This tournament does not come around every year. You can play franchise leagues or international cricket regularly, but this is a rare competition,” he said.
Cricket is also set to feature at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, although the qualification process and number of participating teams are yet to be determined. Litton hopes a strong Asian Games campaign can help Bangladesh move closer to that dream.
“Our immediate goal is to play the final. If we can do something special and create an opportunity to qualify for the Olympics, it would have a positive impact on other sports in Bangladesh as well,” he added.
