Former Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan has made it clear that, despite fresh discussion over his political future, his immediate focus remains cricket and representing Bangladesh in what he described as the final phase of his career.

Shakib, who has been outside the country for nearly two years since the fall of the Awami League government during the 2024 mass uprising, is currently not active in politics.

However, the former Member of Parliament has openly stated that he would consider returning to politics when the time and circumstances are right.

Speaking to Daily Star, the veteran all-rounder shared his thoughts on cricket, politics and the possibility of returning home, while also trying to clarify the discussion created by his recent remarks.

Comparing cricket and politics, Shakib said politics is something that can be pursued for a lifetime, while cricket is limited by time.

“You can do politics for a lifetime, there is plenty of time for politics. The thing that does not have much time is cricket. So I am trying to sort that out first. Politics is a big platform from where meaningful change can be brought. I still have that hope and desire to do something for the people,” he said.

Referring to the current inactivity of the Awami League, Shakib said that with no political activities underway, he is trying to continue playing cricket for now.

“Since our party (Awami League) currently has no activities, I am trying to keep playing cricket. When the party’s activities resume, or when we are able to do that again, then perhaps I will try to return to politics," he said in that interview

Amid the growing debate surrounding those comments, Shakib later issued a public clarification on Facebook, stressing that cricket is his only priority at this moment.

“Assalamu Alaikum everyone,

Recently, one of my comments in the media has sparked a lot of discussion. I want to make the matter very clear to everyone. At this moment, my entire focus is only on cricket.”

At this final stage of my career, I want to give my absolute best for the Bangladesh national team and, if given the opportunity, I want to deliver some memorable performances for my country.”

After I bring an end to my cricket career, I would like to contribute to the development of my country. But that does not necessarily mean it has to be through politics alone. It is possible to work for the country outside politics as well. However, yes, it may be easier to do many of those things through politics.”

I hope I can finish my cricket career with a smile on my face while wearing the red and green jersey. For that goal, I seek the prayers and love of all the people of Bangladesh.”
