Pakistan, currently led by Salman Ali Agha, are on the brink of elimination following their Super Eight defeat to England.
Speaking on a private TV channel, Afridi suggested that Shadab could be appointed captain if head coach Mike Hesson continues in his role.
“If the same coach remains, then in my opinion, Shadab Khan will be appointed as captain,” Afridi said, adding that Pakistan have limited leadership options at present.
“If Shadab had maintained consistency in his bowling, the way he was performing earlier, it would have strengthened his case,” he stated.
Afridi emphasised that leadership must be accompanied by personal contribution.
“As captain, we also need him to contribute regularly with his performances so that when someone speaks about him, it is worth mentioning. Appoint him as captain, but he will have to perform,” he concluded.
Salman Ali Agha, who took over the T20I captaincy in March 2025 from Mohammad Rizwan, has overseen 30 wins in 49 matches (61.22% win rate).
Despite that record, Pakistan endured setbacks in the 2025 Asia Cup and suffered another defeat to India in the ongoing T20 World Cup, raising fresh questions over leadership ahead of the next cycle.
