With no international fixtures lined up before the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup, the Bangladesh women’s cricket team has chosen an alternative route to prepare — competing in their own internal matches. To facilitate this, the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is organising the Women’s Challenge Cup ODI Championship.

The tournament will feature three teams: the Red and Green squads, both comprising members of the national women’s side, along with a boys’ Under-15 team. Each team will face the others twice, with all matches set to take place at BKSP in Savar, starting Monday.

Ahead of this, the women’s team had already completed a month-long training camp in Sylhet as part of their World Cup preparations. They are now in the second phase of camp at BKSP, with this tournament intended to fill the gap of match practice missing from the training schedule.

The Tigresses last played an international match in April, during the World Cup Qualifiers in Pakistan. Despite BCB’s attempts to arrange a preparatory series since then, logistical and other practical challenges prevented it. As a result, this internal competition became the chosen alternative.

The upcoming Women’s ODI World Cup will be staged in India, though, as part of venue-sharing arrangements, matches involving Pakistan and Sri Lanka will be played in Sri Lanka. Bangladesh will begin their campaign in Colombo on October 2 against Pakistan.
