Undefeated Bairstow stands alone as England crumble

Tim Southee and Trent Boult shone against England yet again as the visitors struggled with the bat at Christchurch on day-1 of the second Test in the ongoing series. The Kiwis are well ahead in the two-match series by winning the first match against the English side who currently have more than just their pride at stake.
England haven’t managed to win any of their last twelve matches in the longest format of the game. Winning the toss New Zealand sent them to bat first on Friday and the English batting line-up put up another disappointing performance against the sublime Black Caps duo.

England registered 290 runs for 8 wickets before the umpires called a halt. The Poms were grappling with maintaining constancy and at one point became 94 for 5. However, Jonny Bairstow then stood firm and shared two good stands with Ben Stokes and Mark Wood.
Wood picked up his half-century and posted 52 runs to the scoreboard before getting out bowled by Southee. Bairstow is still not out on 97 runs and will surely look forward to converting his innings into a century to salvage some pride for his team.
On the other hand, Southee has already completed his five-fer in this innings whereas Boult bagged 3 wickets. Ish Sodhi bowled for five overs and remained wicketless but there are still two wickets up for grab in this innings and he will definitely look to make his mark on his return to the Test team after one and a half years.
