Shakib Al Hasan, sidelined from Bangladesh cricket due to political controversies, had expressed his desire to retire from Test cricket on home soil during the South Africa series. However, intense protests prevented his return to the country, leaving his future in limbo.

Despite his absence, Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) President Faruque Ahmed remains hopeful about Shakib’s participation in the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy.

26 May 25Faruque has expressed his intent to discuss the matter with the relevant government ministry, aiming to resolve the issues surrounding the star all-rounder’s availability.
Speaking to the media, Faruque stated, “Shakib has not retired yet. If he had, we would have said he’s no longer part of the team.”
He added that selectors have sought clarity on policies before finalizing the squad for the Champions Trophy, with a January 11 deadline for the preliminary team announcement.

Faruque emphasized that the BCB would make another attempt to include Shakib in the squad, saying, “We will discuss this matter with the ministry before the Champions Trophy. If directives from the government resolve the issues, we can move forward. After that, the selectors will evaluate his fitness and mental state.”

Faruque reiterated that Shakib’s situation is not entirely in the hands of the BCB, as government intervention is required. He noted that Shakib has occasionally communicated with the ministry about potential solutions to his challenges.
The upcoming ICC Champions Trophy will be held in a hybrid model, with most matches in Pakistan and India’s games in Dubai. This overseas tournament increases the likelihood of Shakib’s participation, provided the issues are resolved.
BCB boss acknowledged this possibility, stating, “The Champions Trophy being held abroad makes this a valid question. I believe we should sit with the selectors during this BPL season to finalize a decision.”
