The Bangladesh team is gearing up for a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, known for its short boundaries and batting-friendly pitches. Ahead of the team’s departure, batsman Zakir Hasan reminded everyone of these favorable conditions for batters.

“It’s definitely going to be a challenge, but I think it will be a good series. From what I know, Sharjah’s wicket is excellent, and I’m hopeful for an exciting series,” Zakir said to the media on Sunday in front of the Sher-e-Bangla Stadium academy building before heading to the airport.

This series marks Bangladesh’s return to ODI cricket after eight months. Given recent performances in other formats, particularly with the top order’s inconsistency, confidence is limited. Acknowledging the top order’s struggles, Zakir admitted, “It’s true we haven’t been able to provide a solid start. In several Test matches, we openers didn’t perform well, which hurt us.”

“We can’t dwell on past failures. With series coming quickly, we’re all working on identifying and correcting our mistakes from previous ones. The goal is to build good partnerships in the opening or top order to make things easier for the middle order.”

Afghanistan’s strong bowling attack and their record in Sharjah are often focal points in any series against them. The Afghan team has won four out of their five ODIs at Sharjah this year.

“They’ve improved a lot in bowling; they’re a solid opponent. But instead of focusing on their strengths, it’s better to think about ours” Zakir added.

While part of the Bangladesh squad reached the UAE yesterday, head coach Phil Simmons and a few others arrived today. Due to visa delays, Nasum Ahmed and Nahid Rana are expected to join them tomorrow.
