Mohammad Ashraful is set to coach Rangpur Riders in the upcoming Bangladesh Premier League (BPL), the former national cricketer told Cricfrenzy. However, the decision hasn't been finalized yet.
Ashraful, who returned to cricket after a fixing ban and played a few domestic seasons, unofficially retired from playing last year and began his Level-3 coaching course in Dubai.
Currently, the former Bangladesh captain is busy coaching at various cricket organizations, including BKSP, where he trains players weekly. Now, he is expected to take up the coaching role for Rangpur Riders in the BPL.
"I’ve had discussions with a few teams about coaching. I was supposed to do it last year, but it didn’t happen at the last minute. Instead, I worked as an analyst for a channel during the BPL. This time, I’m hoping to coach, and there’s a good chance I’ll be with Rangpur Riders, In Shaa Allah," Ashraful said.
Ashraful’s coaching experience has given him the opportunity to closely observe young cricketers, especially their interest in T20 cricket. However, Ashraful aims to instill a passion for Test cricket in them.
He added, "In all the places I’ve coached, young players have a very different mindset regarding T20 cricket. We need to move away from that. They believe that technique isn’t as important in T20, but if you have strong basics, you can perform in any format,"
"If you want to survive in international cricket, strong fundamentals are essential. Young cricketers should prioritize Test cricket. Once you strengthen that foundation, you can excel in all formats."
