A new five-team T20 tournament, called the Global Super League, is set to debut in Guyana from November 26 to December 7.
The league, which has a prize pool of US$1 million, will feature teams from five different countries and is officially sanctioned by Cricket West Indies (CWI). It is also backed by the Guyanese government, which is a key partner in the event.
This will be South America's first standalone cricket tournament and will include the Guyana Amazon Warriors from the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) along with four other established T20 teams from around the world.
"The passion for cricket in Guyana rivals that of fans anywhere, and we look forward to celebrating our love of the game and our rich and vibrant country with both those visiting in person and watching from around the world," Clive Lloyd, the Global Super League chairman was quote via a release.
The organizer also invited a Bangladesh Premier League (BPL)'s team and the Bangladesh Cricket Board asked last year's champions Fortune Barsihal to participate but they refused to take part.
However, BCB Boss Faruque Ahmed confirmed that Rangpur Riders, one of the semi-finalists of last year's event, are likely to participate in the new franchise tournament.
"The Global Super League will feature five teams from five different countries, including Bangladesh, Pakistan, West Indies, England, and Australia. We were offered a spot, and at first, we extended the offer to last year's BPL champions, Fortune Barishal. However, they declined due to their inability to participate. After that, we approached another semifinalist team, and they will go if everything is confirmed. The semifinalist team, Rangpur Riders, are likely to participate." Faruque said to media on Monday.
The tournament will consist of 11 matches in total, with each team playing four group-stage games.
The top two teams will advance to the final. All matches will be held at the Guyana National Stadium in Providence. According to a media release, the event will be held annually, with different teams being invited to participate each season.
