Former Australia cricketer Joe Burns will represent the Italy cricket team to help the team qualify for the 2026 T20 World Cup as a tribute to his late brother.

The 34-year-old is eligible to represent Italy through his mother’s heritage, has been selected for their squad in the upcoming sub-regional qualifiers.

Burn's contract with the Big Bash League has expired, leaving him free to pursue other opportunities. Furthermore, he has chosen to wear the number 85 jersey as a tribute to his brother.

"While a part of my soul feels like it will always be missing, I know this shirt will carry on his spirit and give me strength. I often reflect on the bravery and commitment it must have taken my grandparents when they left Italy to start a new life in Australia," said Burns.

"They found a way to make it work through adversity and this has always given me solace through life’s lessons. I’m so proud to represent Italy on our path to the 2026 World Cup," he added.

Burns played 23 Test matches for Australia and scored four centuries. He also represented Australia in six One-Day International (ODI) matches.
