Comilla Victorians, four-time champions, stand as the most successful team in the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL). Guided by owner Nafisa Kamal, the team has successfully cultivated a distinct brand identity, a feat that sets them apart in the country's sole franchise T20 tournament.

However, Nafisa regrets the fact that the leading team owners have not been able to sit with governing council of BPL, to discuss revenue-sharing rights among other things.

“I think in 2019, we discussed this, and at that time, we were told that it would be done. It has been so many years, and it hasn't happened yet. As a franchise, we have made an agreement with the BPL Governing Council. If we want to go ahead with this agreement, we want to have some sharing between us on certain conditions. We are not saying that we have to have a very large amount. If we start the model or process in this way, it will not only benefit us but also all the teams, not just Comilla Victorians,” Nafisa said to the media on Wednesday.

“I believe it will be good for the BPL Governing Council as well if we all can sit at the same table, discuss, share opinions, and come up with a good solution to make the BPL beautiful or sustainable. One or two teams come and go for one or two years. See, we have been here for a long time. Other teams stay for one or two years and then leave. Rangpur has come back, others did not. All the teams should be able to stay for a long time, so we all need to sit at the same table and come to a sharing agreement. The BPL Governing Council will decide how the sharing will take place, but it is essential to have some form of sharing,” she added.

The owner of Comilla Victorians feels the branding of the tournament has been developed this year but said BPL governing body don’t work to promote the tournament like the franchises are doing for years.

“A few years ago, we didn't see it (branding) happening this way. Now I hear that a lot of development is taking place, and they are focusing on various aspects like broadcasting, umpiring, and DRS. Some things are being improved. However, the response from the BPL governing council regarding how we, as BPL franchises, work doesn't seem to be there. That hype is not created there. Each franchise creates its own hype, does branding. I think it's the franchises that are doing it,” she added.

Nafisa expressed her worry earlier, that it will not be possible for Comilla to play the next BPL without revenue-sharing rights. She just wants to have the respect from the body to sit down with the franchises before discussing the serious matters.

“Media rights, ground rights, and then ticket prices are important, but those are things for much later. It would be great if all the franchise owners could sit with the BPL governing council, have a meeting or conversation. I had expressed this desire before. After becoming champions last time, I said the same thing. This concept exists in other tournaments as well, like in the IPL and the PSL. In the PSL, they can't announce dates without talking to the franchises or taking their opinions. I think it's just about showing respect. If we receive this respect, we will be more motivated to work.”
