12 Apr 25Bangladesh's one-day international captain Tamim Iqbal on Thursday announced his immediate retirement from all forms of international cricket, a sudden development coming in the middle of a series against Afghanistan.
He broke into tears as he made the announcement ahead of ahead of the World Cup 2023 which is three months away.
Tamim's decision came just two days after he came under heavy criticism for deciding to play against Afghanistan in the first ODI of a three-match series, despite admitting to not being 100 percent fit.
Bangladesh Cricket Board President Nazmul Hassan led the criticism, calling the player's professionalism into question.
Tamim's 16-year spectacular career has offered Bangladesh cricket fans much delight, and he has broken several records along the way.
The following are five highlights of his international career-
1. 51 against India at World Cup 2007
Tamim made his international debut during the 2007 World Cup in the Caribbean. In the group stage, Bangladesh knocked out India from the competition. Tamim scored a lightning-quick fifty as they were chasing 192. The 16-year-old left-hander, who hit seven fours and two sixes, scored 51 runs off of 53 deliveries.

Especially his one hit over the boundary against Zaheer Khan after charging down the ground became an iconic moment for Bangladesh cricket.

2. Broken hand ‘hero’ at Asia Cup
During their opening match in Dubai against Sri Lanka in 2018 at Asia Cup, Tamim was injured and had a broken wrist. Tamim later stepped out to bat in the lower order with a fractured hand and batted with one hand to support the well-positioned Mushfiqur Rahim at a key point in the game.
When Tamim was brought out to bat with a fractured hand in place of No. 11, Mushfiq was batting on 112 in the 47th over. Musfiq scored 144 runs in all, and those last few runs were important to Bangladesh's stunning victory over Sri Lanka in that match.
3. Back-to-back Test tons against England
After scoring 55 in the first innings Tamim hit a famous Ton in the second innings against England at Lord's in 2010. He smashed 103 off 100 balls, including 15 fours and two sixes. He put his name on the renowned honor board as the first Bangladeshi to score a century at the Home of Cricket.
Tamim carried his brilliant form into the second Test in Manchester as he bagged another brilliant hundred in the first innings, 108 off 114 balls with 11 boundaries and one six.
Later that, he earned a call-up from county side Nottinghamshire the following season.
4. Four fifties in a row at Asia Cup
In the 2012 Asia Cup 50-over competition, Tamim was the first batter to record four consecutive fifty-plus scores. In the final match against Pakistan, which Bangladesh ultimately lost by just two runs, Tamim scored 60 off 68 balls. His previous three fifties were against Pakistan (64), India (70), and Sri Lanka (59).
5. Century against Oman at 2016 T20I World Cup
With his 103-run innings, Tamim became the lone Bangladeshi centurion in Twenty20 international cricket. Tamim scored those runs in that qualifying game in Dharmasala off just 63 balls, including 10 fours and 5 sixes.
