Pakistan likely to miss pacer Shaheen Shah Afridi for an extended period of time as he injured himself during the T20 World Cup final in Melbourne on Sunday against England, he is expected to miss the home series against England and New Zealand between December 2022 and January 2023, according ESPNCricinfo.

It is believed that he has aggravated the knee injury from which he had recently recovered, which also means he could miss the upcoming Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) in January.

Comilla Victorians had bagged Afridi for the next year’s franchise league.

The 43-day long BPL will get underway on January 5 next year with the grand finale scheduled for February 16.

The PCB, which confirmed the injury, said it would take some time to properly asses the injury before providing more information on the matter.

Afridi ran in from long-off in the final at the MCG to take a sharp catch, sending back Harry Brook, but as he slid low to hold the chance, his knee appeared to collapse.

He was clearly in pain and had to leave the field. That happened in the 13th over. He returned an over, ran in gingerly to send down one delivery, but was unable to continue. His right knee is currently immobilized.

Afridi was, in any case, expected to sit out the England Test series to rest. He had been out of action for three-and-a-half months for treatment and recovery following the injury, which he picked up while fielding during the first Test against Sri Lanka in Galle in July.

Haris Rauf is expected to get his first taste of red-ball cricket as Afridi's replacement.
