Bangladesh can win World Cup and that's the beauty of this game, says Dale Steyn

"Our main focus is on the next World Cup, not this one. You can't change everything overnight. We are planning long-term and trying to prepare a squad for the next World Cup" – Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) Nazmul Hasan Papon, when it comes to developing a strong competitive side in the 20-over format, the focus is always on the future.

The T20I phase for the Bangladesh team has not been going well as they have suffered 10 defeats in the last 13 T20I matches.

Bangladesh has struggled in T20Is since losing to Scotland in the first round of the last World Cup.

The Tigers lost close games against Sri Lanka and the West Indies in the second round, and were swept out for less than 100 against South Africa and Australia in the final two games.

Later, the Tigers lost series against Pakistan, the West Indies, and even Zimbabwe, costing Mahmudullah Riyad his captaincy and removing head coach Russell Domingo from the T20 format.

The Tigers' fortunes did not improve under new captain Shakib al Hasan and new technical consultant Sridharan Sriram, as they were eliminated from the Asia Cup after losing both matches against Afghanistan and Sri Lanka.

Bangladesh named their T20 World Cup 2022 squad without veteran Mahmudullah and brought several other changes to the team.

Mahmudullah, despite being a long-serving player, has been dropped due to recent performances. The former captain was in a poor run in the Asia Cup, he made 52 runs at a 106.12 strike rate, and he made just 99 runs in six T20s earlier this year.

The dismal performance in the Asia Cup drew criticism toward the team that triggered the board to take stern decisions ahead of the World Cup.

Even the chief selector Minhajul Abedin Nannu expressed that Mahmudullah did not fit Bangladesh's new structure formed by Sriram.

Recently, Mushfiqur Rahim, another senior player, retired shortly after the Asia Cup, citing to give more time to Tests and ODIs. Meanwhile, left-handed batter Tamim Iqbal also announced his retirement from T20Is.

There are several changes from the Asia Cup squad, including the return of Yasir Ali, Nurul Hasan, Hasan Mahmud, and Najmul Hossain Shanto.

While, Parvez Hossain Emon, Anamul Haque, Mahedi Hasan, and Mohammad Naim have all been left out of the squad.

All-rounder Mahedi Hasan is another cricketer from the Asia Cup squad that did not make it to the T20 World Cup fold.

However, he was named in the reserve lists. Soumya Sarkar and pacer Shoriful Islam were the other available option in the reserve.

Bangladesh will play a tri-nation series against hosts New Zealand and Pakistan, Even if any ‘surprise’ happen there and in Australia under the new set-up, all of the past disasters will be brushed away once more and if Bangladesh face their regular results in the shortest format, BCB will have a 'Tomorrow'.
