Australia spinner Ashton Agar has been ruled out of the second test against Sri Lanka with a side strain, confirmed by Cricket Australia on Saturday.

Agar will be replaced by Jon Holland in the squad, he had been considered a chance of playing in the series despite not featuring in a Test since 2017.

Agar did not even feature in a single match on Australia’s Pakistan tour earlier in the year, after catching COVID in the white-ball leg.

Mitchell Swepson will likely keep his spot when the second Test as the legspinner claimed three wickets in the first innings of the opening Test and two in the second.

"I was really happy with Swepo. A couple of key breakthroughs in the first innings and then [on Friday], top-order wickets. Really valuable. He controlled the tempo of the game, he had some batters come really hard at him. I thought he bowled beautifully," said Cummins.

The second test begins on July 8 after the Australians wrapped up the first test with a comprehensive 10-wicket win.
