Indian pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been named as the new Test captain for India and will lead the side in the Edgbaston Test against England in Rohit Sharma's absence.

Rohit has been ruled out after testing positive for COVID-19 for a second time which opened the door for Bumrah to become the first paceman to lead India in Test cricket since Kapil Dev.

"Rohit is out of this Test match, starting July 1, as his RT-PCR test has come positive again. He is still in isolation. Jasprit Bumrah, who is one of the vice-captains in absence of KL Rahul, will lead the team," a senior spokesperson of BCCI said.

Bumrah was named the vice-captain for the ODI series in South Africa in January 2022 as Rohit was out with injury and KL Rahul had to lead the side.

The 28-year-old will be the 36th cricketer to lead India. The right-arm pacer made his Test debut in 2018, against South Africa at Cape Town, and has since established himself as one of the best in the world. He has already taken 123 wickets in 29 Tests.
