Bangladesh women’s team will contest in the ODI World Cup for the first time as captain Nigar Sultana Joty is confident to face their known opponent South Africa in their World Cup opener.
Bangladesh and South Africa played 17 matches so far, whereas Bangladesh won only 2 matches. However, the skipper was confident to play alongside their known opponent.
"The first match will be very important for us. It will help us get to know how we will progress in the tournament. We will play to win. This is an opportunity for us because we know South Africa well. So, we have a good chance to start with a win,” press conference on the eve of the match.
"We played against South Africa many times. So, we know their strengths. We also played their pacers. We did some homework and want to implement the plans in the match,”

Nigar said her side has properly studied the conditions of New Zealand and wants to build partnerships to set a good score.
"We all understood how to play in this condition. Building a partnership is very important. If we can support each other then we can go for 250-260 runs,” she said.
Nigar wants to do well in the first match and carry the momentum throughout the tournament.
"We want to move forward with every match. We want to make our first World Cup memorable. We all know that it is important to start well. Then we will get more courage and confidence for the rest of the tournament. I am trying to convince the girls that we won’t see the name of the opponents, be it South Africa or any team, we will show our strength, "
"We have a good chance to do well in the World Cup. As a team we have worked hard to come here and we have a lot of good opportunities here,” she added.
Bangladesh’s first ODI was against Ireland, which they won by 82 runs in 2011. They attempted to qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 2013 and again in 2017 but failed to do so.
Bangladesh Women qualified for the 2022 World Cup based on their ODI ranking. In 2019, they scored 211/9 against Pakistan, which is their highest team total. Their lowest team total was 60 all out against South Africa in 2012.
