Bangladesh was granted Test match status by the International Cricket Council (ICC) on this day twenty years back but the specialist players in Test face an uncertain future following the cancellation of the Test series one after another due to the escalating COVID-19 pandemic.

Bangladesh Test cricket still needs a lot to be desired as their form in the longest version of the game is still below par according to white-ball cricket.

Bangladesh were supposed to play the most number of Test matches this year for the instrumentality of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) but that seals a long past distinction now.

Bangladesh Test captain Mominul Haque and Abu Jayed Rahi are the only red-ball central contracted players by the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB).

Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) increased Test match participation fee to Tk 6 lakh per Test match and these two red-ball contracted players lost TK 48 lakh each as the Tigers have to cancel 8 Test matches on the trot due to the Coronavirus pandemic worldwide.

Bangladesh Test captain Mominul Haque said that he knows very well of the cricketers’ time span.

“As age increases, so does the value of a doctor. But the players have very little time. Our maximum value is 10-15 years. In the meanwhile, you have to save money for the rest of your life,” Mominul Haque said.

“We can’t think about those things that have gone at the end of the day mental peace is very important in life. A year was lost though on the way to ensuring a financially peaceful life. Again, whether it is the completion of two decades of Test status,” he added.

Bangladesh fast bowler Abu Jayed Chowdhury Rahi expressed that he does not have big endorsements like star cricketers and is not that well off financially as well.
