West Indies opener Chris Gayle is on the verge of record as they face Afghanistan in their last World Cup match on July 4 at Headingley.
Gayle needs just 20 runs to surpass West Indies legend Brian Lara’s most ODI runs. Lara scored 10,405 runs in 299 ODI matches with an average of 40.48 and Gayle has scored 10,386 runs so far in 297 matches with an average of 38.04.

Gayle declared that he will retire from international cricket after the World Cup but he suddenly decided to postpone his retirement and wished to play ODI series in India so he might get few more opportunities to clinch this prestigious record if he fails to do so against Afghanistan.
This World cup has been a forgetful affair for Gayle and also for the West Indies. Gayle has scored 235 runs so far with an average of 33.57. Gayle’s team West Indies are also down and out in this World cup.
The Windies have lost six consecutive matches. West Indies are at the ninth position on the point table with just three points. They just won one match so far against Pakistan which was their opening World Cup match.
