Bangladesh batsman Mohammad Mithun decides against resting on his laurels as he believes he could not perform to his potential in the three-match ODI’s against New Zealand despite hitting two successive half-centuries.

Mithun missed the third game due to his groin injury but at least it confirmed his position in the Bangladesh team for the time being despite the return of Sabbir Rahman.

Mithun, 28, who has been in and out of the national team for a while now seized it with both hands and eventually turned out to be quite a revelation in the middle-order with his gritty approach.

In fact, Mithun's inclusion for the Asia Cup is recognition for his fine run of form during the Bangladesh A team's recent tour of Ireland, which he began with a duck but ended with three solid half-centuries.

His performances notwithstanding, luck also played a big part in his reinstatement to the ODI squad due to the vacancy created by Sabbir Rahman's disciplinary issues.

Mithun knew that he won’t get his preferred position at the top of the batting order with Liton Das in pole position to open with Tamim Iqbal and tried to adapt in the middle-order and eventually started delivering by withstanding the pressure.

Now with Sabbir back into contention after his ban was reduced and is likely to be one of the major contenders for filling the lower middle-order spot and with Shakib al Hasan returning back after his injury lay-off, his position in the playing XI is certainly not granted.

With the experience he had in the national team earlier during the time when he failed to make a permanent place in the national dressing room, he looks to be wiser than before.

With the Ireland tri-nation not far away it is expected that player like Mithun will be feeling the heat more than anything as it is expected to be a dress rehearsal of Tigers for the World Cup.

According to Mithun, he is yet to start his preparation for the World Cup and rather he is concentrating on the DPL but insisted he is aware of the importance of the tri-nations in Ireland that will also feature Windies as the third team.

“I am concentrating totally on the league now,’’ Mithun told reporters without elaborating when he was asked about his plan for international cricket on Wednesday.

‘’I did not start any other preparation yet,’’ he said. “If I think that by playing the premier league my preparation for England is covered it is totally wrong because the condition is totally different there,” he said.

“So keeping that in mind we need to prepare accordingly along with playing the league. As far as I know, both condition in England and Ireland are quite similar to the matches in Ireland will be extremely helpful for our World Cup preparation,’’ he said.

“They are a competitive side in their own territory so it well good for our preparation,’’ he added. Mithun said that he is not aware whether he is changed after the New Zealand series considering he managed to produce some note-worthy performance as he feels he did not fulfil his responsibility to the best of his ability as he failed to notch a hundred on both occasions.

Mithun batting looked to be more stable than before in the middle and was very much in command against the pace-unit of the host who had given the tourist a very hard time throughout the tour.

“I had the responsibility to do well there but I could not fulfil that totally because both the innings could have been bigger. I am not sure whether those innings brought any changes in me because I always try to perform in every match,’’ said Mithun.

“It was naturally challenging because we went there after the BPL. The main challenge was to adapt to the condition. It was even a bigger challenge for the batsmen as it is all about the matter of one delivery [ to get dismiss] so all the time you have to bat keeping that in mind,’’ he said.

“No batsman want to stay in double figure and every batsman wants to reach the three-digit score. So if an innings ends in 50 it is not enough. If it can be progressed further than it is helpful for both the team and for the individual as well,’’ he added.

For the time being the former BKSP student is focusing totally on his fitness as he believes it can help every cricketer raise his performance. “I personally focus hard on my fitness because you can always return to form if you are fit,’’ said Mithun.

“Unless you are fit you cannot do anything. Because you cannot play without having proper fitness and it is extremely important for any player. Everyone is professional and knows his job,’’ he said.
