Chandimal named in Test squad despite suspension chances

Sri Lanka have named a 16-man squad for their upcoming Test series against South Africa. The two-match series is scheduled to commence on July 12.
Rangana Herath and Kusal Perera have been named in the squad and their inclusion is subject to fitness. Herath had split the webbing on his right hand between the fourth and fifth finger during a practice session before the third Test against West Indies.
Perera, on the other hand, had bumped into the boundary hoardings during the third Test and was later cleared of serious injury. Although he featured in that match unlike Herath, both are currently recovering from their respective accidents.
Angelo Mathews have been included in the squad after missing the previous series against the Caribbean side. He had to fly back to Sri Lanka for the birth of his second child during that series.

Dinesh Chandimal has also earned a spot in the squad despite the possibilities of getting banned for the next few matches after admitting to breaching Level 3 offence along with coach Chandika Hathurusingha and team manager Asanka Gursinha. He was suspended for the third Test against West Indies after being found guilty of tampering with the ball during the second match. Suranga Lakmal is likely to lead the side in Chandimal’s absence.
Asitha Fernando, Dasun Shanaka, Malinda Pushpakumara, and Shehan Jayasuriya have been put on standby for the Lankan side.
Mahela Udwatte has been dropped after struggling in the last series while disciplinary problem cost Jeffrey Vandersay a spot in the squad.
