The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) has appointed South African coach Malibongwe Maketa as assistant coach of the national men's cricket team for a two-year term running from October 2026 to November 2028.

The 46-year-old will join the national coaching setup in the UAE, bringing more than two decades of coaching experience across domestic, international and high-performance cricket in South Africa.

Maketa holds a Cricket South Africa (CSA) Level 4 coaching qualification and has previously served as assistant coach of the South African men's national team, head coach of South Africa A and South Africa Under-19, head coach of the National Academy, and head coach of the Warriors franchise.

He was part of South Africa's coaching staff from 2017 to 2019, including at the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup in England. During that period, he was involved in several successful bilateral campaigns, including Test series victories against Australia and India, as well as series wins against Sri Lanka and Pakistan.

Maketa has also played a significant role in developing emerging cricketers through his work with South Africa A, the Under-19 team and the National Academy, preparing young players for the demands of international cricket.

Most recently, he served as head coach of South Africa Under-19 and the National Academy, alongside assignments with South Africa A. He guided South Africa Emerging to the CSA One-Day Cup Division 2 title in the 2023–24 season and previously led the Under-19 side to the semi-finals of the ICC Under-19 World Cup.

Speaking after his appointment, Maketa expressed gratitude to the BCB for the opportunity and said he was eager to contribute to the team's progress.

“I am pleased to accept the position of Assistant Coach with the Bangladesh National Team. I am truly grateful for the trust and confidence placed in me by the Bangladesh Cricket Board, and I look forward to contributing positively to the team's success,” he said.

“We have a young and exciting team, and I am looking forward to working alongside Phil and the rest of the coaching staff to help bring out the best in the players and support their continued development.”

Maketa added that he was excited to begin the new chapter and contribute to the Bangladesh national team.
