The 37-year-old, who has 125 Tests, 37 centuries and an average of 54, admitted that even the prospect of winning an Ashes series in England cannot convince him to commit this far ahead.
“I don’t even know if I’ll be there yet. I’m kind of a series-by-series proposition, as I’ve been for a while.”
For now, Smith’s focus is Australia’s upcoming three-Test series against South Africa. It will be his first Test tour of the country since the 2018 ball-tampering scandal.
Smith played down the history and instead highlighted South Africa’s current strength, particularly their pace attack.
“For me, it’s just another series. All that happened a long time ago. They’re a good side at the moment... so should be a cracker of a series.”
Despite uncertainty over his Test future, Smith remains motivated and has no fixed retirement date. He also hopes to continue playing T20 cricket, with the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics among his ambitions.
“I’ve achieved a lot in the game. It’s been a great ride... I’m still enjoying it, so I don’t have an end date.”
Smith also believes his batting remains in good shape, despite the increasing difficulty of scoring runs in challenging Test conditions.
“I feel like I’m batting really nicely. I’ve found different ways to go about things on these tricky surfaces and still be able to score runs.”
