Bangladesh are set to play their first Test series in Australia in 23 years, with the opening match scheduled to begin on August 13 in Darwin.
Speaking to reporters before the team's departure, Shanto described the tour as a significant occasion for Bangladesh cricket.
“I feel very lucky that we are going to Australia to play a Test series against them.”
The skipper believes Bangladesh should have had more opportunities to play Test cricket in Australia over the past two decades.
“We should have played more matches there over the last 23 years. If we had played better cricket, maybe we would have received more opportunities. Our main goal is to play good cricket there and earn respect. If we can play competitive cricket, they will surely invite us again in the future.”
Shanto said the team's primary objective is to produce competitive cricket and leave a lasting impression on the hosts.
While victory remains the ultimate target, Shanto stressed that pushing Australia throughout the series will also be a measure of success.
“We play every match to win. But it is also important how much of a tough time we can give them.”
Australia have selected a full-strength squad for the series, something Shanto sees as recognition of Bangladesh's recent progress in the longest format. He credited the entire squad for earning that respect through consistent performances in Test cricket over the past few years.
“I was very happy after seeing their squad. They have not taken us lightly. This respect has been earned by every player in the team because of the way we have played Test cricket over the last two or three years.”
