Speaking on his YouTube channel, Basit said the BCCI acted too quickly and should have waited for tensions to subside before making such an announcement. According to him, delaying the decision until after the World Cup could have prevented the escalation of events.
“The BCCI made a mistake by releasing Mustafizur Rahman from the IPL in such a hurry. They could have waited for things to cool down before making the announcement. Had they done it after the World Cup, we would not be in this situation today,” Basit said.
The former batter, known for his outspoken views as a cricket analyst after retirement, believes the decision had far-reaching consequences.
“That one mistake triggered everything. Because of it, Bangladesh refused to tour India, and now Pakistan has also taken a firm stand,” he added.
Basit also expressed concern over the scheduled India–Pakistan match on February 15, saying the game not taking place would send a negative message for world cricket.
“If Pakistan truly do not play India and India get two points via a walkover, it will damage the game and its future,” he said.
Addressing the possible financial impact of a boycott, Basit dismissed concerns over the Pakistan Cricket Board’s stability.
“The Pakistan board has no financial crisis. This decision has been taken on the instructions of the government, and if needed, the government will provide financial support to the board,” he added.
