Bangladesh wrapped up a commanding victory in the first Test against Ireland, winning by an innings and 47 runs on the fourth day at the Sylhet International Cricket Stadium.

The hosts had effectively set the stage for a big win on the third day, dismantling Ireland’s top order and reducing them to 85 for 5. Although the visitors showed resistance on the fourth morning, they could not avoid defeat.

Ireland were bowled out for 254 in their second innings, after scoring 286 in the first. Bangladesh had declared their first innings at a mammoth 587 for 8.

Andy McBrine kept Ireland’s hopes alive with a determined fifty, frustrating Bangladesh in the first session. He reached 52 with five boundaries before being dismissed shortly after lunch. Attempting to pull a short delivery from pacer Nahid Rana, McBrine mistimed the shot and offered a catch to Hasan Murad at short midwicket.

After McBrine’s dismissal, Jordan Neil and Barry McCarthy counterattacked with positive batting, adding a brisk 54-run partnership off 56 balls. Hasan Murad broke the stand when Neil (36) failed to clear long-off, where Sadman Islam completed the catch on the second attempt.

The final breakthrough came through a review. Taijul Islam’s delivery brushed McCarthy’s bat and carried to wicketkeeper Liton Das. The on-field umpire denied the appeal, but UltraEdge showed a clear spike, confirming the edge. McCarthy scored 25.

Ireland resumed the day at 86 for 5. McBrine and Matthew Humphreys added 31 valuable runs, with Humphreys surviving an early chance when an outside edge popped towards Shanto, who couldn’t hold on to a tough catch near his throat.

But Humphreys didn’t last long. Attempting a slog sweep off Taijul, the ball took the top edge and went straight to Sadman at backward square leg.

A series of reviews kept the morning lively. McBrine survived two consecutive reviews—first overturning an LBW decision, then escaping another as the ball hit bat before pad.

Ireland captain Andy Balbirnie also used a review to stay alive after being given not out, with replays showing the ball would have missed leg stump.

However, Hasan Murad ended his resistance with a sharply turning delivery that trapped him LBW. The review didn’t help as the ball was shown to be clipping the outside of leg stump.

With disciplined bowling and consistent pressure, Bangladesh wrapped up the innings and secured a comfortable win to go 1–0 up in the series.
